Call to Order
Chair Toner called the meeting to order at 1:31pm.

Mission Statement and Land Acknowledgment

MISSION STATEMENT

A commission to foster support, respect, awareness and appreciation of diversity among all citizens of Flagstaff.
LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

The Commission on Diversity Awareness humbly acknowledges the ancestral homelands of this area’s Indigenous nations and original stewards. These lands, still inhabited by Native descendants, border mountains sacred to Indigenous peoples. We honor them, their legacies, their traditions, and their continued contributions. We celebrate their past, present, and future generations who will forever know this place as home.
Chair Toner read the Mission Statement and Land Acknowledgment. 
 
4.
Upcoming Opportunities and Announcements
Guest Kim Robinson from The Lived Black Experience Project announced there will be community dinners on September 24th and October 7th from 2pm-4pm at the Murdoch Community Center.  On October 7th there will be a Health Fair from 10am-2pm and a Community and Cultural Market from 4pm-7pm, also at the Murdoch Community Center.

Chair Toner reminded the commission about the Transforming Care Conference in Columbus, OH and the Better Together event in Phoenix, AZ.  She also reminded the commission about sustainability grants that are due to the City by September 30th.

Public Comment

The Commission cannot act upon items presented during the Public Participation portion of the Agenda. Individual Commission members may ask questions of the public but are prohibited by the Open Meeting Law from discussion or considering the item among themselves until the item is officially placed on the Agenda. Each public comment or presentation will be limited to five (5) minutes.

Approval of Minutes: August 16th, 2023
Commissioner Camp made motion to approve Minutes from August 16th, 2023.  Commissioner Pino seconded motion, carried unanimously.

Date of Next Meeting: October 18th, 2023

Action Items
 
A.
  1. Update on Juneteenth.
Council Person House asked the commission to let her know when it gets close to Juneteenth so that she reintroduce the topic to City Council and that the commission continue to work the Indigenous Commission too.
 
B.
Discussion of formal efforts for the women’s right commission.
No updates to report.
 
C.
Presentation by NAU assistance Vice President Justin Mallett
Guest Dr. Mallett gave an in-depth presentation to the commission regarding the foundation of diversity and inclusion and how it can impact the community of Flagstaff.
 
D.
Presentation by Valeria Chase liaison between NAU and City of Flagstaff
Moved to next month's meeting.

Reports/Discussion Items
 
A.
Proclamations
 
i.
Proclamations Work Group Update, provided by Carolyn Kidd, Bethany Camp, Mandy Gebler
Nothing to report.
 
ii.
Updates from Staff Liaison - Staff Liaison will give any potentials updates on city council meeting.
Council Person House advised the commission the proclamation for Hispanic Heritage Month was read to City Council the night before.  She said she has received feedback from community members who feel their groups are less or not seen or engaged with, but continues to refer them to CODA meetings.

Recommendations to Council (updates and future items)
No new recommendations.
 
C.
Current Commission Priorities. Work group list report or update
Chair Toner advised the commission this would be her last meeting as the Chair, but will remain on the commission for the duration of her term.  She will forward pertinent information to the incoming Chair and Vice Chair.
 
D.
Collaboration with library
Chair Toner updated the commission on a meeting with Library Liaison Felicia French and the LGBTQ+ History Project they are collectively working on and will present in November.
 
E.
Update on the fair item on the equitable restrooms.
Council Person House advised the commission she has reached out for an update the fair item on the equitable restrooms, but has not received response yet.
 
F.
Anti-Camp Ordinance review of data for move to another committee
Commissioner Pino updated the commission on the progress being made with the Anti-Camp Ordinance review of data, which has been assigned to a Criminal Justice class (with an emphasis on social justice) at NAU as a project for the Fall Semester. The class would like to present their findings at the conclusion of the semester in December.
 
G.
Discussion on Diversity Flag
No new information or updates on the Diversity Flag, Commissioner Kidd will reach out to Rose to find out what can be done to continue to move the project forward.  She will also seek out graphical representations and their meanings to present at the next meeting.
 
10.
Agenda for Future Meeting(s)
Commissioner Kidd advised the commission that a City of Flagstaff employee reached out on behalf of some community members, regarding having non-binary language added in recreational books, and would like to have the discussion added to the next agenda.  Staff Liaison Keita will follow-up.
 
11.
Adjourment
Chair Toner adjourned the meeting at 2:48pm.
