Mission Statement and Land Acknowledgment

MISSION STATEMENT

A commission to foster support, respect, awareness and appreciation of diversity among all citizens of Flagstaff.
LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

The Commission on Diversity Awareness humbly acknowledges the ancestral homelands of this area’s Indigenous nations and original stewards. These lands, still inhabited by Native descendants, border mountains sacred to Indigenous peoples. We honor them, their legacies, their traditions, and their continued contributions. We celebrate their past, present, and future generations who will forever know this place as home.
Vice Chair Kidd read the mission statement.  Commissioner Pino read the land acknowledgment.

Public Comment

The Commission cannot act upon items presented during the Public Participation portion of the Agenda. Individual Commission members may ask questions of the public but are prohibited by the Open Meeting Law from discussion or considering the item among themselves until the item is officially placed on the Agenda. Each public comment or presentation will be limited to five (5) minutes.
Alicia Henry, the Vice President of  Flagstaff Pride, advised the commission her organization is working to put a rainbow crosswalk downtown and are working on fundraising and maintenance plans.  Will be placed on a future agenda.

Approval of Minutes: September 20th, 2023
Commissioner Jarvis made a motion to approve the minutes, Commissioner Jain seconded, passed unanimously.

Date of Next Meeting: November 15th, 2023
Commissioner Pino request to move up the December meeting so that the NAU students could present their anti-camp ordinance findings.  The commission agreed the next meeting would remain November 15th and the December meet would be moved to December 6th, 2023.

Action Items
 
A.
Update on Juneteenth.
Council Member House and Liaison Keita did not have any updates on the progress of Juneteenth at the time.
 
B.
Anti-Camp Ordinance review of data for move to another committee
Commissioner Pino updated the commission on the students' progress.

Reports/Discussion Items
 
A.
PROSE presentation Haley Reynolds.
Haley Reynolds from City of Flagstaff PROSE gave a presentation to the commission on changes their division in making to use more inclusive language across their programs.
 
B.
Proclamations
 
i.
Proclamations Work Group Update
Vice Chair Kidd provided an update to the commission on Native American Heritage Month.
 
C.
Updates from Staff Liaison- Staff Liaison will give any potentials updates on city council meeting.
Liaison Keita and Council Member House gave the commission an update on discussion surrounding NAH's new hospital project.

Liaison Keita advised the commission the progress on getting calendars put together and on the website.

Work Group list or update.

Collaboration with library.
Commissioner Toner updated the commission on moving forward with collaboration with the library and Felicia Fiddler and upcoming presentation.
 
F.
Update on the fair item on the equitable restrooms.
 
G.
Discussion on Diversity Flag.
Vice Chair Kidd update the commission on ongoing discussion with Rose Tohe for flag design.  She also presented some graphical examples to the commission for suggestion and ideas.  Council Member House advise the commission they have made some progress on the Indigenous Commission and the plan to move forward with a Black History Month flag and take the recommendation from CODA back to City Council for a flag specific to the City of Flagstaff.  Commissioner Jarvis suggested reaching out to the Tri Diversity Council for feedback and Council Member House added the Live Black Experience Project would be a local resource as well.

Discussion of formal efforts for the women’s right commission.

Vice Chair Kidd adjourned the meeting at 2:20PM.
