Submitted For:
Rebecca Grohall

SUBJECT:

Resolution 15-R04 renaming the Avenue D Historic District as the Lincoln Park Historic District based upon historic accuracy and appropriateness.

SUMMARY:

  • The City of Fort Pierce, in 2002, adopted the Avenue D Historic District by Resolution 02-40, seeking to embrace the rich heritage and architectural integrity found along the corridor.
  • This Historic District has been the center of economic, commercial and social activity for the African American community since the settlement of Fort Pierce.
  • The contributing properties within the district represent a broad range of architectural styles, including wood frame vernacular, shingle style, classic Florida cracker, masonry vernacular, and some fine examples of the shotgun house, as well as buildings that are culturally important to the community such as the Lincoln Park theater.
  • The Fort Pierce Historic Preservation Board, at their November 25, 2013, approved sending a letter of support for the City Commission to rename the “Avenue D Historic District” as the “Lincoln Park Historic District” based upon its historic accuracy and appropriateness.
