SUBJECT:
Approve entering into a contract with Florida Department of Corrections for a Labor Crew in an amount not to exceed $65,122 to provide additional labor to assist the Parks and Grounds Division in maintaining City rights of ways, properties and parks.
SUMMARY:
The Public Works Department seeks to enter into an agreement with the Florida Department of Corrections to provide an inmate labor crew that would be utilized within the Parks & Grounds Division.
This agreement would provide the City with one (1) supervising deputy and up to five (5) inmate workers for 40 hours per week. With the areas of responsibility continuing to increase, this crew would be responsible for assisting the Parks & Grounds Division in maintaining City right of ways, properties and parks. The City will provide the vehicle and equipment needed for this crew to perform their weekly tasks.
The additional personnel would be a tremendous benefit to this Department and go a long way in Keeping Fort Pierce Beautiful.
The contract is provided for review and has been approved as to form and correctness by the City Attorney.
Locally, similar contracts are being utilized by Indian River State College and the Florida Department of Transportation.

RECOMMENDATION:
The Public Works Department recommends approving the request to contract with the Florida Department of Corrections to provide an inmate labor crew.
