Modification of Interlocal Agreement - Animal Shelter

SUBJECT:

Approval of First Amendment to March 23, 2021 Interlocal Agreement for Operation of Animal Shelter to provide for termination of the Interlocal Agreement on March 8, 2022. 

SUMMARY:

  • March 2021, the City of Fort Pierce and St. Lucie County entered into an Interlocal Agreement to provide for the operation of an animal shelter at the Savannah Road location. 
  • November 2021, St. Lucie County Board of Commissioners voted to terminate the Interlocal Agreement and establish their own animal shelter.
  • December 2021, the Sunrise Humane Society sent notice to St. Lucie County enacting the termination clause of their contract with an end date of March 8, 2022.
  • December 17, 2021 St. Lucie County agreed to the termination of their contract with the Sunrise Humane Society on March 8, 2022.
  • December 20, 2021 St. Lucie County contacted the City of Fort Pierce requesting consideration of amending the Interlocal Agreement to match the termination date of March 8, 2022.

RECOMMENDATION:

Staff recommends approving the amendment of the Interlocal Agreement so that the termination date corresponds to the termination date of the contract between the Sunrise Humane Society and St. Lucie County.

ALTERNATIVES:

Reject the amendment in total.
Determine an alternate termination date.
