Animal Shelter Agreement - Amendment 1 to allow for management of the facility

SUBJECT:

Approval of the First Amendment to the Service Agreement for Shelter Administration and Animal Care to allow for the Sunrise Humane Society to contract with the City of Fort Pierce to provide management services at the shelter.

SUMMARY:

  • The Sunrise Humane Society has been operating the animal shelter since March 2021 and since that time, due to a variety of issues, has experienced difficulties in retaining a manager of the facility.
  • Following the termination of services with St. Lucie County, the Sunrise Humane Society's income was reduced by $20,000.00 per month, causing additional challenges to filling this position.
  • The Sunrise Humane Society conducted a review of its operations and determined there was a need to request assistance from the City in filling this position and submitted a formal request to the City on June 16, 2022.
  • City staff has reviewed the request from the Sunrise Humane Society and met with the Executive Board of Directors and agree that it is in the best interest of both parties to enter into an agreement to provide the management services at the shelter.

RECOMMENDATION:

Approve the First Amendment to the Service Agreement for Shelter Administration and Animal Care.

ALTERNATIVES:

Deny the request to approve.
Amend the proposed amendment.
