Re
Resolution 16-R011 - Recognizing A Segment of Avenue A as Marina Way
Submitted For:
Rebecca Grohall

SUBJECT:

Resolution 16-R16 - Recognizing the portion of Avenue "A" lying between the Indian River Lagoon and North US Highway 1 as  “Marina Way”.

SUMMARY:

  • The City Commission  of the City of Fort Pierce on June 6th, 1923, adopted Ordinance A-6 that created a series of street names and associated house/structure numbering guidelines.
  • The Fort Pierce City Marina, established in 1938 at the terminus of Avenue A, contributes significantly to the development, redevelopment, and promotion of the city's historic Downtown, waterfront, recreation, and commerce.
  • The application of a notable, secondary, name to this portion of Avenue A will recognize the importance of this link to the downtown and marina, while enhancing  vehicular and pedestrian navigation.  This would be only for the segment of Avenue A that is east of US 1 to the waterfront.
  • The proposal presents a dual nomenclature arrangement which provides businesses the opportunity to retain their historic, existing Avenue A address or change their street name to Marina Way.  The numbering system would be retained, for example 100 Avenue A could choose to remain with that address or become 100 Marina Way.
  • The City of Fort Pierce Community Redevelopment Advisory Committee, at their February 17th, 2016 meeting, voted unanimously to support this proposal.
  • Notification letters were mailed to Eleven (11) property owners abutting this segment of Avenue A to provide an opportunity to deliver feedback regarding the proposal. Additionally, business owners along this stretch have been notified via email of this consideration. To-date, no written feedback has been garnered, with the responses being limited to inquiry into potential impacts to the delivery of mail. An update will be provided to the Commission at the meeting.
