SUMMARY:

The police department requests approval to submit and accept the 2014-2015 U.S. Department of Justice Byrne Criminal Justice Innovation Program grant in the amount of $1,000,000. There is no match requirement.

The Byrne Criminal Justice Innovation Program grant provides 100% funding to projects that improve community safety by designing and implementing effective, comprehensive approaches to addressing crime within a targeted neighborhood as part of a broader strategy to advance neighborhood revitalization through cross-sector community-based partnerships.

The police department proposes to utilize funds to implement the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention's Comprehensive Gang Model in the northwest section of Fort Pierce. The Comprehensive Gang Model is a data-driven, collaborative approach to reducing and preventing gang violence using five strategies - community mobilization, opportunities provision, social intervention, suppression and organizational change and development.
