SUBJECT:

Approval to submit and accept the OJJDP FY 2018 Gang Suppression Planning Grant Program and a corresponding letter of support.

SUMMARY:

OJJDP FY 2018 Gang Suppression Planning Grants Program CFDA #16.544 and #16.123

The OJJDP FY 2018 Gang Suppression Planning Grants Program is part of the Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) suite of programs, which is focused on reducing violent crime. The PSN suite includes PSN, Strategies for Policing Innovation, Innovative Prosecution Solutions, Crime Gun Intelligence Centers, the National Public Safety Partnership, Technology Innovation for Public Safety, Encouraging Innovation: Field Initiated Programs, Innovations in Community-Based Crime Reduction, and Community-Based Violence Prevention Demonstration. These initiatives will coordinate proactively with the PSN team in the district of the respective U.S. Attorney’s Office (USAO) to enhance collaboration and strengthen commitment to reducing violent crime.

The FPPD requests approval to apply for this grant opportunity in collaboration with the Roundtable of St. Lucie County to further fund and develop the Restoring the Village Youth Initiative anti-gang programming established in 2014.

RECOMMENDATION:

The recommendation is that this request be approved to allow for the continuity of the currently established programming. 

ALTERNATIVES:

The alternative is to decline this request and provide other directives to assist the Roundtable and RTVYI in securing future funds for its anti-gang efforts.
