Homeless Initiative 2019 - Update from Louise Hubbard, Treasure Coast Homeless Services Council
Louise Hubbard, Executive Director for the Treasure Coast Homeless Services Council, provided a handout to the committee showing financial assistance given to specific Fort Pierce zip codes and homeless point in time counts. Ms. Hubbard explained that a family with a child ranks higher for housing benefits and finding housing for the homeless can be difficult due to leasing evictions and rental units not passing inspection.
Dr. Anita Cocoves, Grant Program coordinator consultant for the Cty of Fort Pierce Police department and Stacy Malinowski, Program Director for Mustard Seed, were in the audience and they both provided additional information on the homeless situation, including calling 211, rental assistance, income limits, Social Security disability, grant opportunities and the number of Baker Acts in St. Lucie County. Ms. Malinowski stated a shelter is needed that has access to transportation and showers. Dr. Cocoves stated that rent is lower in Fort Pierce, compared to any other place on the Treasure Coast.
