NEW BUSINESS
Staff Hobley-Burney informed the meeting that the department was working with local and federal partners for the upcoming Trump Trial in August. Concerns have been raised about the security of the city and the impact on local businesses. To ensure the safety of the public, a number of roads will be closed. Approval is being awaited from the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) for the closure of US Highway 1 in front the Court House and other surrounding streets. Businesses are being sensitized about the trial and are being encouraged to monitor their parking lots for their employees and customers. Residents will be informed that once the trial begins the department will only respond to priority calls. Also, a unified command concept will be used to manage the trial which allows each agency to lead in their area of specialty.

Funding for the activity is also a concern but Staff Hobley-Burney shared that discussions have been had with the City Manager regarding the needs of the department. She outlined that new equipment will be procured in preparation for the trial. Member Murray inquired if the events around the affected area will be cancelled in the light of the trial. Staff Hobley-Burney in response stated that a request has been made for no permits to be issued for the old city hall. A meeting with key players has been arranged to work out the logistics for the trial. Member Hayek asked how long the trial will be. Staff Hobley-Burney said no information was available and that she learned about the trial through the news. Member Jones shared that trial is being held in the area because of the judge.

Members were informed that a mob trial is currently being held in the city and will last for two to three weeks. Information about the witnesses is not available and Staff Hobley-Burney outlined that there have been no issues with this trial.

Staff Hobley-Burney shared with members that the department had a swearing in ceremony for the new Major, Michael Santiago. She outlined that Major Santiago has experience with managing large events and has been instrumental in the planning for the trial as well as meeting with the Hispanic community regarding their concerns about the new Florida immigration law.
