RESOLUTION NO. 8521 - A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF HAWTHORNE, CALIFORNIA ADOPTING THE CITY OF HAWTHORNE SAFETY ACTION PLAN.
RECOMMENDED MOTION:
Staff recommends that the City Council approve Resolution No. 8521
DISCUSSION:
Public Works staff successfully submitted an application for the Safe Streets and Roads for All Grant Program and was awarded $200,000 from the United States Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration. The grant allowed the City to create a Comprehensive Safety Action Plan to address areas where safety countermeasures are urgently needed, primarily in underserved communities. The plan identifies areas to inform and guide further safety evaluation of the City's transportation network.
The emphasis areas include types of crashes, certain locations, and vulnerable users. A working group, comprising representatives from the City's Public Works, Planning, Community Services, Police Departments and City Manager's office, was established to develop, implement, and monitor the Safety Action Plan.
The group was in charge of planning, executing, and evaluating strategies to achieve the plan's Vision and Goals, and will continue to oversee safety improvements within the City. The implementation of this plan is important as it is a major step that the City is taking towards enhancing all modal safety throughout. With the Safety Action Plan, the City continues to prioritize safety in its planning process and it better positions the City for safety funding from state and federal grant programs.
