SUBJECT:
An agreement between the Hawthorne Police Department and Action Target for maintenance and necessary upgrade of the Hawthorne Police Department range in the amount of $155,000.00
RECOMMENDED MOTION:
Staff recommends that City Council approve the agreement with Action Target for maintenance and necessary upgrades to the Hawthorne Police Department Range in the amount of $155,000.00 and authorize the Chief of the Police Department to execute the agreement and make minor amendments thereto.
DISCUSSION:
The Hawthorne Police Department’s shooting range, located in the underground parking garage of the Police Station, is approximately 20 years old and requires maintenance and safety upgrades. These upgrades include addressing the ballistic walls, bullet trap, and target system.
The range was last updated in 2015 with cosmetic improvements that included new flooring, paint, and a computerized range control system. Additionally, the armory was reorganized with a rack system, and an armorer’s workshop was created to enable certified range officers to perform minor repairs and maintenance on department firearms.
At the time of the 2015 updates, several issues that now require attention were not yet present. Over the past decade, the ballistic walls and bullet trap have degraded, and several mechanical and equipment components have reached the end of their service life.
The necessary upgrades were included in the approved FY 2024-2025 Police Department budget and received City Council approval during the budget process. A purchase order for the requested scope of work was also approved.
