Discussion and approval to authorize the Hidalgo County Health and Human Services Department to submit an application for the National Integrated Heat Health Information System (NIHHIS) Heat Tabletop Exercise Challenge.

The Hidalgo County Health and Human Services Department is requesting authorization to apply for the National Integrated Heat Health Information System (NIHHIS) Heat Tabletop Exercise Challenge on behalf of Hidalgo County.
This funding opportunity aligns with and expands the department's existing Heat-Related Illness Initiative and supports the mission of the Public Health Preparedness Division. Through this competitive opportunity, NIHHIS will award up to 40 communities with $25,000 to develop and conduct a heat-related tabletop exercise. Awards will be based on the quality of the submitted tabletop exercise Situation Manual. The application deadline is August 12, 2026.
If awarded, Hidalgo County will develop and conduct a tabletop exercise focused on organizations responsible for youth participating in outdoor activities, including school athletic programs, marching bands, and community sports organizations. The exercise will enhance community preparedness for heat-related emergencies while providing participating organizations with practical heat safety resources and best practices. Grant funds will support exercise planning and implementation, educational outreach, and heat preparedness materials for participating organizations.
