BACKGROUND

The Water Environment Federation, in collaboration with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, has awarded our Public Health Laboratory the GeneXpert Automated PCR System to support rapid, on-site detection of viruses in wastewater samples. This system enables near real-time surveillance of key respiratory viruses including SARS-CoV-2, Influenza A & B, and RSV, enhancing our ability to monitor community health trends. The award includes the GeneXpert device, all necessary reagents, and 200 respiratory test cartridges, supporting testing 3 to 4 times per week for approximately one year. This powerful tool will strengthen our public health response by enabling timely prevention and response efforts within the community.

• Laptop loaded with GeneXpert software

• 200 disposable pipettes
• Personal protective equipment (PPE): disposable gloves, safety glasses, and face masks
• Training on the use of the GeneXpert device, software, and PPE, and instructions on how to extract quantitative results from the GeneXpert output files
