Approval of Economic Development Agreement No. 2026-0159 with Christopher Kohl's Fire District.
Background Information
Every year, funds are budgeted to support economic development activities. Christopher Kohl's Fire District has applied to Gila County for an economic development grant in the amount of $9,000 to support the construction of an alternative septic system at the fire department.
Under A.R.S.§ 11-254, contributions may be made to any governmental agency or to a non-profit corporation that enjoys and maintains federal tax-exempt status as long as all monies are utilized for the purpose determined to be public by the Board.
Christopher Kohl's Fire District requested funds in 2024 to assist with the construction of a septic system at the fire department. The Fire District and the local community could not afford to pay for the installation of a septic system. The District began the process of installing the septic system and found that, due to property lines, location of well, property shape, as well as other factors, it was determined that the best solution was to install an alternative system. The estimated costs are $16,100 for installation. The District has a $9,000 balance from funds received in 2024, and therefore just requires $7,000 to complete the project.
The fire station is a critical component for the small community of Christopher Kohls. The station houses a mechanic 1 to 2 days a week, as well as the firefighters, and in the summer, the United States Forest Service posts resources at the station during fire season. The station also hosts Homeowner's Association meetings, and the station has not been able to provide any amenities thus far for the surrounding area. In 2022, the County provided assistance to the station for the establishment of a water well, and the next step to make the station self-sufficient is the construction of a septic system.
Christopher Kohl's Fire District will advertise Gila County on their website, reporting materials, and in their outreach materials to the public.
