STAFF PRESENTER(S): Javier Setovich, Public Works Director

SUMMARY

Creation of CIP project 60108 to replace the 8,000 gallon diesel fuel tank at Fire Station 183 and authorizing related budget amendments.

Recommendation

Approve the creation of CIP project 60108 for Fire Station 183 Diesel Tank Replacement and authorize related budget amendments. (Javier Setovich, Public Works Director)

FISCAL IMPACT

Establish CIP Project 60108 Fire Station 183 Diesel Tank Replacement in the amount of $120,000 utilizing unallocated general fund balance.

BACKGROUND AND PREVIOUS ACTIONS

The 8,000 gallon diesel fuel tank was installed at Fire Station 183 in 2002.  The expected life cycle of the tank is 30 years so this is not yet included in the current 10 year forecast of the Fleet Asset Management Plan.

STAFF ANALYSIS

An inspection of the tank found a layer of sediment at the bottom.  After removal of the sediment, it was discovered the tank floor was corroded down to 1/32” thick.  It is expected to be 1/2" thick. The tank monitoring system is equipped to detect water but not the sludge that had built up in the tank and caused the corrosion that shortened the service life of this tank.

With the support of the Fire Department, who is the primary user of this tank, it was decided to replace the tank.  The timing proved well, as the fire station will be vacated in the near future for a renovation project.  The budget amount will include removal of the old tank and piping, building a new tank, shipping, labor, and installation of the new tank and piping.  The project is estimated to take between 9-11 months.
