CALL TO ORDER

Chairman Hohman called the Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission meeting to order at 5:33 p.m.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES
 

MOTION BY Commissioner Gerald Wilson, SECONDED BY Vice Chairman Jose Gonzales to APPROVE the draft minutes from the Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission meeting held on October 18, 2023.

2.
REVIEW AND APPROVE THE PARKS & RECREATION ADVISORY COMMISSION 2024 MEETING CALENDAR
Commissioners will review the 2024 Parks & Recreation Advisory Commission meeting calendar and Vote to Approve. (Chairman Hohman)

-The commissioners discussed the 2024 meeting calendar and concluded to meet on the second Wednesday of the month. The February meeting will be scheduled on the third Wednesday of the month, February 21, 2023.
-The meeting calendar will be updated and sent out to the commissioners.

Commissioners will Nominate and Vote to Appoint Parks & Recreation Commission Chairman and Vice Chairman for 2024. (Chairman Hohman)

4.
GOALS, AGENDA ITEMS AND PRESENTATIONS FOR 2024
Deputy Director David Seid will have discussion on 2024-Goals, Agenda items and Presentations. (Deputy Director David Seid)

-Deputy Director Seid asked the commissioners to provide input for the agenda items in 2024, and if there are topics of interest.
-Seid encouraged commissioners to think about it and inform at any time, what they would like added to upcoming agendas.
 
5.
LOMA LINDA POOL PROJECT: UPDATE AND SPLASH PAD COLOR SCHEME
Superintendent Mike Beadle will provide an update on the Loma Linda Pool Project and present color schemes for commission consideration. (Recreation Superintendent Mike Beadle)

-Superintendent Beadle gave a presentation on the renovations of Loma Linda Pool and the new splash pad.
-The project is 2.0 million in improvements and will consist of three phases: Asset replacement--make updates, replacement of some amenities, such as a diving board, deck replacement, and bleachers; improvements and code compliance--new deck lights, pool lights, tarps, and code compliant electrical panel; and new features--removal of the baby pool and replace it with a splash pad with non-slip surfacing and shade covers.
-Deputy Director Seid noted that the community was involved and engaged in the decision process for the renovations and were overwhelmingly in support.
-Superintendent Beadle shared with the commissioners the three color schemes for consideration for the splash pad amenities.
-The marine palette consists of aquatic tones, with shades of blue, saffron and white.
-The first vibrant palette maintains the blue tone while bringing in lots of bright colors for contrast and excitement to the area.
-The second vibrant palette has bold traditional colors, red, yellow and blue.
-The commissioners discussed the three palettes, and they thought that the vibrant color scheme with lots of bright colors was more appealing, and were in support of the vibrant colors.
-Superintendent Beadle stated the asset management replacements will begin this Spring.
 
6.
PARKS AND RECREATION DEPARTMENT UPDATES
Deputy Director David Seid will give Parks and Recreation Department updates. (Deputy Director David Seid)

-Deputy Director Seid thanked the commissioners for attending the council meeting for the Master Plan approval and thanked the commissioners for their service to the Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission in 2023.
.-Seid stated that the Goodyear Civic Square holiday in the park event and activities have been a success.
-Seid stated that Spring training is coming to the Ballpark soon and aquatics and summer recreation program will follow in the summer.
-Director Torres informed that within the next six months, planning on concepts for phase II of Recreation Campus will begin, and the commissioners will be involved.
 
INFORMATION ITEMS
Comments, Commendations, Report on Current Events and Presentations by Board, Commission or Committee Members, staff or members of the public. The members may not propose, discuss, deliberate or take any legal action on the information presented pursuant to A.R.S. § 38-431.02.

Commissioner Wilson gave a favorable review of the We Ride program the City of Goodyear offers. He did note that a bench would be helpful at the pick-up stop.

Chairman Hohman shared how impressive Parque de Paz Park looks, the upkeep, the flowers and the memorial look beautiful. She commended Superintendent Jeremy Figueroa and his staff, for their outstanding performance.
 
NEXT MEETING

The next meeting will be determined upon approval of the 2024 Commission meeting calendar.

The commissioners approved the next meeting to be Wednesday, February 21, 2024, at the Goodyear Recreation Campus.
 
ADJOURNMENT
There being no further business to discuss, Chairman Hohman adjourned the meeting at 6:30 p.m.
