CALL TO ORDER

Chairman Paulos called the Arts & Culture Commission meeting to order at 5:34 p.m.

MOTION BY Commissioner Jennifer Barnes, SECONDED BY Commissioner Anna Johnson to EXCUSE Vice Chairman MacFarlane and Commissioner Cross from the Arts and Culture Commission meeting held on March 19, 2024.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES
 

MOTION BY Commissioner Nancy Love, SECONDED BY Commissioner Rosiland Robinson to APPROVE the draft minutes from the Arts & Culture Commission meeting held on January 9, 2024.

ARTWORK CONCEPT FOR FIRE STATION 182 MOSAIC MURAL:
The Commissioners will vote to approve the artwork concept for Fire Station 182 Mosaic Mural (Kristine Kollasch, Artist)

Artist, Kristine Kollasch, presented the mosaic mural for Fire Station 182.
-Kristine talked about the design considerations such as the architecture and location of the wall; input from the design committee and surrounding community; input from Estrella Director and developer; and 212 community survey responses.
-The design concept will consist of 8 floating panels that create one overall design using steel, tile, glass, and stone mosaics.
-The input integrated into the overall design consists of things that make Estrella unique: nature & animals, plants, trail system, mountains, and sahuaro; first responders, public safety, and Granite Mountain Hotshots.
-The commissioners were impressed with the mosaic mural design and took a vote to approve.

3.
APPROVE ARTWORK CONCEPT FOR LOMA LINDA MURAL:
The Commissioners will vote to approve the artwork concept for Loma Linda Mural (Brigitte De Marco, Artist)

Artist Brigitte De Marco presented the artwork concept for the Loma Linda pool mural.
-Brigitte met with local youth for input and the historic Goodyear community for design feedback and approval.
-The design requirements are to include the theme of water; to be area and environment specific; and to have a photo spot.
-The proposed design depicts an oasis theme of water, desert scenery with native plants, native animals, and an accurate mountain line of the Estrella’s.
-The commissioners were impressed with the mural artwork and took a vote to approve.

APPROVE ARTWORK CONCEPTS FOR FISCAL YEAR (FY) 24 TRAFFIC CABINET ART PROJECT:
The Commissioners will vote to approve artwork concepts for FY24 Traffic Cabinet Art Project (Selected Artists)

-There were twelve traffic cabinet artwork concepts presented to the commissioners for input and approval.
-The commissioners were impressed with the artists' artwork and took a vote to approve.

5.
EDUCATION AND PROGRAMS UPDATE:
Commissioner Robinson will give an update on Education and Programs (Roz Robinson, Commissioner)

Commissioner Robinson discussed the new contest and workshops she is leading for this year's Juneteenth event.
-Youth are invited to participate in two workshops led by Dr. Sanders to learn about Juneteenth, and materials will be provided to participate in the Expression Contest.
-Entries will be judged by the Juneteenth planning committee, and winners will be showcased at the event and win prizes.
 
6.
ARTS UPDATE:
Coordinator Layne Ruiz will give an update on the arts (Layne Ruiz, Arts & Culture Coordinator)
Coordinator Ruiz gave a brief update on the FY25 Annual Art Plan with items recommended by the Arts & Culture Commission.
-The plan included public art tours, PopUp temporary art, West Valley Art Temporary Art Program, Traffic Cabinet Public Art, and maintaining current assets and celebrating what we have.
-Future forecast is still tentative, but may include Public Artwork at Fire Station 184, and Art Trail at GSQ.
-Ruiz asked the commission for any suggestions to be added to the future forecast. There were no comments, but the commission will continue to plan for future public art in Goodyear.

The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, May 7, 2024, at the Goodyear Civic Square, Georgia T. Library Community Room.
