The meeting was called to order by Chairman Love at 5:30 pm.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Approve the draft minutes of the Arts and Culture Commission meeting held on May 12, 2026

CHAIRMAN REMARKS (NANCY LOVE, CHAIR)
The Commission discussed the Juneteenth Celebration held at Goodyear High School. Highlights included positive feedback on the venue, which provided a great space to observe different activities, along with strong community turnout and popular food trucks. Chairman Love applauded the Arts & Culture team for their hard work on the event. Commissioners Iwasaka and Hill both praised the overall organization, noting that it was an enjoyable experience for the families and community members in attendance.

WELCOME AND INTRODUCE NEW COMMISSIONERS (NANCY LOVE, CHAIR)
Chairman Nancy Love welcomed new Commissioners Jeremiah Hartshorn and Pete Diliberti to the Commission. The Commission acknowledged their appointment, and brief introductions were shared. The Commission expressed appreciation for their willingness to serve and participate in the work of Arts & Culture.

WELCOME AND INTRODUCE NEW PARKS AND RECREATION DIRECTOR (GUYLENE OZLANSKI, DEPUTY DIRECTOR)
Deputy Director Guylene Ozlanski introduced the new Parks and Recreation Director, David Lopez Jr., who joins the city of Goodyear from Texas. Mr. Lopez shared that he has 25 years of experience in the parks and recreation field and extended his gratitude to the commission for their work and dedication to serving the city of Goodyear.

FIRE STATION 184 CONCEPT APPROVAL (MARY SHINDELL, ARTIST)
The Commission reviewed and discussed the proposed public art concept for Fire Station 184, presented by artist Mary Shindell. The artwork design is inspired by traditional hand-painted scrollwork found on vintage fire trucks and incorporates elements of the Palo Verde tree, including its flowers, to reflect the character of the site. The proposed installation consists of six waterjet-cut textured aluminum panels featuring traditional scrollwork and a Maltese Cross motif. Commission members reviewed the design, materials, fabrication process, and proposed placement of the artwork before considering concept approval.

6.
ARTS UPDATE (LAYNE RUIZ, ARTS & CULTURE COORDINATOR)
An arts update was given by Arts & Culture Coordinator LayneRuiz, including upcoming public art projects. The artist selection process for Fire Station 187 has been completed, with Daniel Moore selected as the project artist. Additional projects currently in development include the HOLA West Valley Temporary Art Program, Fire Station 189, GRC Phase II, Veterans Day Murals, Traffic Cabinet Art, new heART of Goodyear artwork installations, and the refurbishment of the public artwork Ziz.
 
7.
PROGRAMS UPDATE (DALTON ATTIG, ARTS & CULTURE PROGRAMMER)
A program update was presented by Arts & Culture Programmer Dalton Attig. Recent Art Talks were held throughout May, June, and July, and the department continues preparations for the PW Litchfield Heritage Lecture scheduled for July 16. Additional programming updates included Follow Your Art Jr., the Employee Art Show on display through July 31, and the upcoming Everyday Wonders Art Show reception scheduled for August 6. A new Commissioner's Choice Award was also unveiled, inviting Commissioners to vote for their favorite artwork, and an award will be presented to the winner at the upcoming reception.
