1.
WESTMARC UPDATE
Economic Development Director Lori Gary introduced Sintra Hoffman, President & CEO of Western Maricopa Coalition (WESTMARC).
Ms. Hoffman noted that WESTMARC was a partnership of 15 west valley communities and reviewed the organizational structure as well as the strategic plan that included their mission statement and goals. She began the discussion with the first goal of promoting a talented workforce. She then discussed the top factors in location decisions and the West Valley Pipeline Regional Workforce Development strategy.
Councilmember Pizzillo left the meeting at 5:08 p.m.
Ms. Hoffman provided information on the three pillars of the West Valley Pipeline that included marketing, industry partnerships and outreach and discussed the industry sectors that were targeted for the west valley.
Council asked how WESTMARC is reaching out to new employers. Ms. Hoffman replied that they develop relationships with new employers through partnerships with cities. She added that for businesses that are already established, WESTMARC works with them through membership and many are current members.
Ms. Hoffman continued the discussion by reviewing the second goal: Market the West Valley with One Voice. She added that her favorite part of her job is talking about the great assets in the west valley such as the Goodyear Recreation Center. She also relayed that the west valley’s secret sauce is that it is a cohesive community which comes from the leadership of the mayors.
Ms. Hoffman reviewed the Greater Maricopa Foreign Trade Zone adding that it has created almost 15,000 jobs and brought in 16 companies.
Ms. Hoffman spoke about Goal 3: Increase Member Value, that included items such as regional marketing, networking events and Class A attraction strategies. She talked about the 2022 Initiatives with regard to what needs to be celebrated or what the concerns are and identifying, developing and promoting emerging leaders in the community.
Council thanked Ms. Hoffman and WESTMARC and expressed appreciation for all the work they do.
