| TO: | HONORABLE MAYOR AND COUNCILMEMBERS |
| FROM: | JIM SADRO, CITY MANAGER By: Kelly Fujio, Director of Community Services |
| SUBJECT: | APPROVE A GRANT AGREEMENT WITH PROVIDENCE ST. JUDE MEDICAL CENTER ACCEPTING FUNDING IN THE AMOUNT OF $85,000
|
RECOMMENDATION:
That the City Council approve and authorize the City Manager to execute a grant agreement with Providence St. Jude Medical Center accepting funding in the amount of $85,000 to fund the cost of a grant writing consultant for health and wellness programs, fitness equipment for senior exercise in the Community Center Expansion, and a community garden project at San Miguel de Allende Park.
DISCUSSION:
Since 2014, the City has fostered a close working relationship with Providence St. Jude Medical Center (Providence St. Jude), partnering on a number of programs and projects over the past decade. Each year, as part of its Community Benefit Program, Providence St. Jude invests volunteer time and resources with local communities to increase access to health care for vulnerable populations and to provide residents with the support they need to make their neighborhoods healthier and safer. Consistent with prior year grant guidelines, Providence St. Jude is again requiring that proposed grant funds be used to help combat obesity by providing La Habra residents with additional opportunities to support healthy lifestyle choices through increased physical activity and healthier food choices.
If this round of proposed grant funding is approved and accepted by the City, the grant would provide:
- $20,000 to retain a grant writing consultant to identify and apply for community health & wellness programs for the Hillcrest Health & Wellness Center;
- $60,000 to purchase new fitness equipment for the senior exercise space in the Community Center expansion building; and,
- $5,000 for a community garden operation, to include marketing, signage and outreach, as well as providing resources for gardening workshops/farmer's markets.
- Oversee the implementation of the La Habra "Healthy Eating Active Living" "Fit" (HEAL) designation;
- Create a "Safe Routes to Park/School" policy to support the HEAL designation;
- Update, support, and oversee the implementation of the "Move More, Eat Healthy" (MMEH) campaign; and,
- Submit two Project Reports to Providence St. Jude.
FISCAL IMPACT/SOURCE OF FUNDING:
If the City Council approves and authorizes staff to pursue this grant opportunity, Providence St. Jude Medical Center will provide $85,000 to the City to fund the projects and programs detailed in this report. There is no local match requirement to accept this grant.
