APPROVE A GRANT AGREEMENT WITH PROVIDENCE ST. JUDE MEDICAL CENTER ACCEPTING FUNDING IN THE AMOUNT OF $63,071

RECOMMENDATION:


That the City Council approve and authorize the City Manager to execute a grant agreement with Providence St. Jude Medical Center accepting funding in the amount of $63,071 to fund the cost of outdoor fitness equipment and a hydration station at the Hillcrest Health and Wellness Center, as well as fund the revitalization of the garden area at San Miguel de Allende Park. 

DISCUSSION:

Since 2014, the City has fostered a close working relationship with Providence St. Jude Medical Center (Providence St. Jude), working on a number of programs and projects over the past nine years. Each year, as part of its Community Benefit Program, Providence St. Jude invests volunteer time and resources into local communities to increase access to health care for vulnerable populations and to provide residents with the support they need to make their neighborhoods healthier and safer. This year, the proposed grant funds will be used to help combat obesity by providing La Habra residents with additional opportunities to support healthy lifestyle choices through increased physical activity and healthier food choices.

If this round of proposed grant funding is approved and accepted by the City, the grant would provide:
  • $55,135 for the City to purchase outdoor equipment for use by the community at the City's Hillcrest Heath and Wellness Center, with the City being responsible for the installation of the equipment;  
  • $4,936 for the purchase of one outdoor hydration station at the Hillcrest Health and Wellness Center, with the City being responsible for the installation of the equipment; and,
  • $3,000 for the revitalization of the garden at San Miguel de Allende Park. The effort to undertake this project will be made as part of the City's annual "Love La Habra" day of service scheduled in September 2023.

FISCAL IMPACT/SOURCE OF FUNDING:

If the City Council approves and authorizes staff to pursue this grant opportunity, Providence St. Jude Medical Center will provide $63,071 to fund these projects and programs detailed in this report. Staff estimates that the City's cost to prepare the sites and to install the equipment procured by this grant will be between approximately $15,000 and $25,000. There are available funds within the City's Public Works Department budget to cover the cost to install this equipment; therefore, no additional appropriation is being requested at this time.

Goal 2 (Management of Public Revenues and Fiscal Assets), Objective G - Pursue grant funding where and when possible to supplement and/or replace direct City funding

Goal 3 (Maintenance and Improvement of City Infrastructure), Objective B - Maintain and upgrade City buildings, facilities, and parks
 
Goal 6 (Community Outreach and Civic Engagement), Objective E - Build and maintain partnerships and collaborations with other local government agencies, the business community, local non-profit organizations, and the faith-based community
