TO: HONORABLE MAYOR AND COUNCILMEMBERS

FROM: JIM SADRO, CITY MANAGER
By:  Kelly Fujio, Director of Community Services

SUBJECT:
APPROVE A GRANT AGREEMENT WITH PROVIDENCE ST. JUDE MEDICAL CENTER ACCEPTING FUNDING IN THE AMOUNT OF $23,899

RECOMMENDATION:

That the City Council approve and authorize the City Manager to execute a grant agreement with Providence St. Jude Medical Center accepting funding in the amount of $23,899 to fund the cost of a grant writing consultant, support for the implementation of the SPARK (Supporting Partnerships to Assure Ready Kids) Physical Education Curriculum and rollover funding to purchase outdoor fitness equipment, distance markers, activity promotion materials, and "Move More Eat Healthy" signage at the new Vin Scully Centennial Park currently under construction.

DISCUSSION:

Since 2014, the City has fostered a close and effective working relationship with Providence St. Jude Medical Center (Providence St. Jude), working collaboratively on a number of programs and projects over the past eleven years. Each year, as part of its Community Benefits Program, Providence St. Jude invests volunteer time and resources into local communities to increase access to health care for vulnerable populations and to provide residents with the support they need to make their neighborhoods healthier and safer.

If this round of proposed grant funding is approved and accepted by the City, the grant would provide:
  1. $10,000 for a grant writer to help prepare grant applications for health & wellness activities; and,
  2. $13,899 to purchase Gopher Sports - SPARK Physical Education Curriculum Equipment packages for different age groups for early play opportunities. The program will benefit the Spring and Summer Day Camps and Child Development Program.
The SPARK PE curriculum is a program that strives to foster environmental and behavioral change in children. The objective of this program is to teach students in grades K-12 how to develop healthy lifestyles, motor skills, movement knowledge, and social and personal skills during PE classes, after-school programs, early childhood, classrooms, and recess settings. The equipment packages come with a variety of sports and activity gear and equipment, along with instructional aids.

Additionally, grant funding in the amount of $60,000 from Fiscal Year 2024-2025 will roll over and be used to purchase outdoor fitness equipment, distance markers, activity promotion materials, and "Move More Eat Healthy" signage at the City's new Vin Scully Centennial Park to encourage and support healthy lifestyles.

FISCAL IMPACT/SOURCE OF FUNDING:

If the City Council approves and authorizes staff to pursue this grant opportunity, Providence St. Jude Medical Center will provide $23,899 to fund these projects and programs detailed in this report, with $60,000 rolled over from the FY 2024-2025 budget.  There is no local match requirement to accept this grant.
