AGENDA ITEM DESCRIPTION OR LEGISLATION TITLE
A RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING, CELEBRATING AND DECLARING THE MONTH OF FEBRUARY AS BLACK HISTORY MONTH IN THE CITY OF LORAIN, OHIO
PURPOSE AND BACKGROUND:
WHEREAS, the month of February is nationally recognized as Black History Month and serves as a time to honor, reflect upon, and celebrate the significant contributions, achievements, and lasting impact of African Americans throughout the history of the United States; and
WHEREAS, Black History Month provides an opportunity for residents of the City of Lorain to deepen their understanding of Black history, heritage, and culture, and to recognize the many African American leaders, innovators, educators, workers, artists, and public servants who have shaped our nation, the State of Ohio, and the City of Lorain; and
WHEREAS, increasing awareness and knowledge of Black history strengthens our community by fostering greater understanding of civil and human rights, acknowledging the progress made toward equality, and recognizing the ongoing challenges related to racial injustice, discrimination, and economic disparity; and
WHEREAS, Black History Month highlights the richness and diversity of African American experiences and contributions that have profoundly influenced local, national, and global culture; and
WHEREAS, recognizing Black History Month reminds all individuals that resilience, innovation, leadership, and courage can overcome marginalization and systemic barriers, and that the pursuit of dignity, equality, and justice remains an enduring responsibility shared by all members of the community.
