Presentation of Citizen and Employee Service Recognition Awards

Presentation of service recognition awards.
Summary:
The Mankato Public Safety Awards Committee endorses recognition awards to five citizens and three employees for actions that directly contributed to the effort to save a person’s life on October 26, 2024 (see below).
On October 26, 2024, Public Safety was dispatched to a male who had passed out, possibly having a seizure. While en route, responders were notified that CPR was being started by bystanders. Upon arrival, responders found that CPR was being performed by retired Mankato Fire Commander Donald Lehne and Carrie Ketel. Additionally, Ramon Pinero assisted by holding the patient’s head. Derek Peterson helped check for vital signs. Jake Krier had located a nearby Automatic External Defibrillator. Donald Lehne applied the defibrillator and delivered three shocks to the patient.
After arriving at the scene, Firefighters Matt Jackson and Matt Goodrich applied the LUCAS device to resume chest compressions. Firefighter Jackson then took over airway management with assistance from Firefighter Greg Hubbard. Firefighters then continued to assist ambulance staff with patient stabilization and transport to the hospital.
The patient survived the cardiac arrest and was released from the hospital a week later. His survival is credited to the fast and effective response of the civilians who initiated CPR and defibrillation.
