Resolution authorizing the Mankato Department of Public Safety to apply for the Firearms Storage Grants – Byrne State Crisis Intervention Program.

Summary:
The Mankato Department of Public Safety has been invited to apply for funding through the Firearms Storage Grant Program — Byrne State Crisis Intervention Program.
The Minnesota Department of Public Safety, Office of Justice Programs (DPS-OJP), is seeking grant proposals to support the safe and secure storage of firearms owned by individuals subject to Extreme Risk Protection Orders (ERPO). Approximately $489,331 in federal funding is available statewide to support these efforts.
Eligible expenses may include, but are not limited to, firearm lockers, safes, storage boxes, gun racks, electronic keypads for securing firearm storage rooms, barcode scanners, and other equipment or administrative costs directly related to the secure storage and management of firearms collected pursuant to an ERPO.
This is a reimbursement-based grant program, meaning no funds are advanced at the time of award, and there is no maximum award amount established for applicants.
Application for this funding would support enhanced firearm storage, accountability, and security practices for firearms collected by law enforcement from persons subject to Extreme Risk Protection Orders. Staff is requesting authorization to apply for this grant opportunity to enhance public safety operations while offsetting equipment and implementation costs through available federal funding.
