AGENDA RECOMMENDATION |
5.I.
City Council Regular Meeting
- Meeting Date:
- 09/14/2026
Agenda Item:
Resolution approving conveyance of a parcel from the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) containing the Military Monument within the Trunk Highway 22 corridor.
Recommendation/Action(s):
Adoption of the attached resolution.
Summary:
In 2018, MnDOT granted the City of Mankato a Limited Use Permit for the purposes of constructing and maintaining military service stone columns and supporting structures within the Highway 22 Corridor. After World War II, in honor of our local veterans, a portion of Highway 22 from Mankato to Mapleton, was designated as “Victory Drive.” Starting in 1948, many people, including the Mankato Garden Club, Maple River High School students, numerous community volunteers, MnDOT, and others had contributed to planting a large volume of trees along that corridor over time. Here is a link to the previous memo: AgendaQuick™ – View Agenda Item.
When MnDOT reconstructed Highway 22 in 2017-2018, approximately 600 trees were removed. In its place, a Memorial project was created. The Memorial was built on each end of the highway, one in Mapleton and one in Mankato. Consistent with the Limited Use Permit and the plans at the time the Memorial was constructed, it is time for MnDOT to convey the improvement to the City. Since construction, the City has been maintaining the Memorial and its grounds.
Staff are recommending acceptance of the parcels and the Memorials.
