Adoption of the attached resolution.

Land acknowledgements are generally a starting point for recognizing and supporting Indigenous communities. The City of Mankato is long past that starting point and has woven equity and diversity throughout its Strategic Plan. The collaborative work done thus far shows the commitment by the city to the ongoing partnership and collaboration with tribal communities, moving in a spirit of reconciliation; and advocating and promoting practices that honor Indigenous roots, history and contributions. The groundwork has already been laid and actions taken.

Over the last 40+ years, the Dakota Peoples, City of Mankato, and community members have made great strides toward healing, reconciliation efforts and partnerships, which include Reconciliation Park, Adoption of Indigenous Peoples Day, the Annual Mahkato Wacipi Pow Wow in Land of Memories Park honoring the 38+2 Dakota and the Dakota Wokiksuye Memorial Ride and Memorial Relay Run.

The Mankato Land Acknowledgement:

• Recognizes and acknowledges we are located on Indigenous land.
• Shows respect and acknowledges the Dakota Peoples’ past, present and future and the importance of their continuing presence.
• Helps further reconciliation efforts.
• Educates ourselves and others and encourages the support of the local Indigenous community. 

The Mankato Land Acknowledgement Guide:

• Provides information about healing and reconciliation efforts between Mankato, the Dakota and other Indigenous Peoples.
• Defines and explains what a land acknowledgement is.
• Shares the Mankato Land Acknowledgement.
• Explains when to use the Mankato Land Acknowledgement Statement.
• Provides pronunciations and definitions of Dakota terms.
• Includes a list of resources.

Because land acknowledgements are generally a starting point for recognizing and supporting Indigenous communities. It’s important to continue authentic relationships with Indigenous people and to take informed, ongoing action. Other community members, businesses and groups are encouraged to use Mankato’s Land Acknowledgement Statement.
