Review of Public Safety Technology Enhancement and Video Surveillance Strategy

Summary:
The City of Mankato has been utilizing video surveillance technology since 2005, with 541 operational cameras currently deployed across the city. As technology continues to evolve, we are exploring opportunities to enhance our existing infrastructure through AI-driven analytics, license plate recognition (LPR), mobile surveillance units, and multi-agency intelligence-sharing platforms such as Flock.
This discussion will provide an overview of our current surveillance capabilities, highlight potential enhancements, and outline a tiered implementation approach to ensure cost-effective and strategic improvements. We will also discuss the policy framework, data security measures, and funding sources related to these enhancements.
The goal of this discussion is to gather City Council feedback on the proposed strategies, priorities, and potential investments in public safety technology. Any feedback received will be incorporated into a refined proposal for future Council consideration.
