Resolution authorizing the City Manager to dispose of surplus Public Safety equipment and acquire modern equipment.

The Mankato Department of Public Safety is transitioning from outdated equipment assigned to police patrol vehicles and replacing it with updated, less-lethal equipment options. As part of this transition, thirty-two shotguns, associated optics, and ammunition have been identified as surplus equipment that is no longer necessary for current Department operations.  The shotguns are approximately forty years old. 

Staff obtained an exchange quote from Streicher’s Police and Public Safety Equipment Company providing $7,620 toward the purchase of replacement 40mm and Pepperball less-lethal equipment. The proposed exchange provides a practical and cost-effective means of modernizing patrol equipment while obtaining replacement equipment necessary to support current police operations and enhance the safety of officers and the public.

Staff recommends that the City Council approve the resolution authorizing the City Manager to execute an agreement to dispose of the identified surplus Public Safety equipment and complete the proposed exchange with Streicher’s Police and Public Safety Equipment Company for $7,620 toward the purchase of replacement less-lethal equipment for Department of Public Safety operations.
