Background:
Mankato Area Public Schools has been approached by SunEdison to enter in a long term agreement for the purchase of electricity generated by community solar gardens through Xcel Energy. The information in the attachment summarizes the program and lists other school districts and units of government that have signed agreements to participate. The legislature has provided tax incentives for solar companies to construct solar gardens and requirements on utilities to purchase electricity from renewable sources. Units of government are ideal clients for the projects because the vendors are looking for long term stable high volume energy users. The initial proposal required a 25 year commitment but has since been revised to a 15 year commitment with options to extend the agreement in 5 year increments. Projected electrical savings are $34,000 in the first year.
