Subject: Resolution 24-R-72 - Authorizing Schertz Main Street Local Flavor Economic Development Grants for 513 and 817 Main Street. (S.Williams/B.James) 

BACKGROUND

The owner of 817 Main (Grayhouse Blooms Flower Shop) is applying for a fifth Main Street Local Flavor Economic Development Grant. To date, $11,163.15 have been paid in grants. The applicant is having to do ceiling work due to water damage. The estimated cost of the eligible portion of the work is $1,000.00, the grants are 50/50 matching grants, so the City would pay up to $500. The owner of the property at 513 Main (City on a Hill Church) is having to replace 3 of 4 AC units, the total cost is approximately $56,000.00 but the systems grant, into which this would fall is capped at $15,000.00, the maximum amount the City would pay. 

GOAL

Promote and enhance commercial activity along Main Street to promote the economic, cultural and general welfare of the public. The area around Main Street in Schertz once served as the commercial and social hub of the community. The City seeks to improve the image of the area around Main Street through matching grants that promote local economic development and stimulate business and commercial activities.

COMMUNITY BENEFIT

Encourage the attraction of small businesses that will create local charm and help develop a sense of place around Main Street. Promote commercial development. Stabilize and improve property values. Foster civic pride. Strengthen the economy of the City by protecting and enhancing the attractiveness of the Main Street area to residents and visitors, as well as provide support of local businesses.

SUMMARY OF RECOMMENDED ACTION

Staff recommends approval of Resolution 24-R-72, approving a Schertz Main Street Local Flavor Economic Development Grant for up to $500.00 for 817 Main Street and up to $15,000.00 for 513 Main Street.

FISCAL IMPACT

The maximum fiscal impact of both of these grants is $15,500.00. Currently, $26,469.47 in grants has been paid this fiscal year to date. There are $19,152.50 in grants that are open and there is one grant of approximately $6,477.50 in the process of being paid. 

RECOMMENDATION

Approval of Resolution 24-R-72.
