Discussion and possible directions to staff on any and all matters regarding the Resolution No. 1194.  A resolution of the Mayor and City Council of the City of San Luis, Arizona, officially naming the park located at the corner of Urtuzuastergui Street and 9th Avenue to Eligio Ramirez Park.  (Louie Galaviz, Parks & Recreation Director)

SUMMARY:

Mr. Eligio Ramirez' journey started in San Luis, AZ in 1970 when he came to San Luis, AZ with his parents, who were Mexican-American immigrants, and started working at the Imperial Market for a couple of years. He then moved to King Market in which he worked for over 20 years and then on to Factor Sales in which he worked for 12 years. During all those years, he became involved in the community where he volunteered for the Potable Water Board and was the secretary of the Comite De Bienestar for 12 years. As a board member in Comite De Bienestar, he helped new San Luis, AZ residents find lots to build homes in. He was also a part of the Planning and Zoning Commission as a Member and Vice Chair. He attended the Escuela Técnica in San Luis Rio Colorado, Sonora from Elementary to High School. As a young man, he was involved in sports such as soccer, volleyball and baseball and supported youth groups throughout his adulthood. He helped develop baseball leagues and encouraged children to participate. He and his wife would welcome youth and their parents to their home for dinner and supported them by helping them with the purchase of uniforms and sports equipment if needed. He supported the Industrial Baseball League in San Luis Rio Colorado, Sonora and would take his children as well as local youth to participate. He traveled with them to tournaments in Veracruz, Chihuahua, Mexicali and Tijuana. He coached his son's baseball team and had the opportunity to play at Friendship Park's Baseball Field from 1990 - 1992. He met Cesar Chavez in the 70's and was part of the movement. His personal achievement is that he has never received a driving violation ticket and that he became a naturalized American Citizen in 2009. Although Mr. Ramirez lived a couple of years in Yuma and Somerton, his journey started and stayed here in San Luis, Arizona where he ended up settling down and accomplishing many great things. The naming of this park, by the Comite De Bienestar, was for his countless hours of dedication and commitment to the youth and people of San Luis, Arizona that wanted to make this place their home too. He is proud to have been a part of the growth in this town now a growing City and help develop those partnerships with APS, the Yuma County Water Users Association and other government agencies for the betterment of the community. This is why we would like to officially name the park located at the corner of Urtuzuastegui Street and 9th Avenue to Eligio Ramirez Park.
