ITEM:
Discussion and possible action on any and all matters regarding honoring retired San Luis Police Officers. (Gerardo Sanchez, Mayor)
SUMMARY:
There is a desire to honor retired San Luis Police Officers for their service to our community. A suggestion was brought to city administration that the City of San Luis issue retired police badges. These badges would symbolize the retired officers' service.
The retired badges would not confer any authority or power. Under the Federal Law Enforcement Officer Safety Act (LEOSA), retired police officers may carry concealed weapons in all 50 states if they retire in good standing. The Police Department issues retired identification and a letter for eligibility under LEOSA. The badge would be separate from that process.
Several things can be done to clarify that the former officer is retired and not an active police officer. The badges would not be the pin-on type. They may be in a mold to display on a desk. They may be on a plaque or shadow box to display on the wall. The word "retired" would be prominent and conspicuous.
