ITEM:
Discussion and possible directions to staff on any and all matters regarding the appointment of a Council Member to serve on the Western Arizona Economic Development District (WAEDD). (Francia Alonso, Acting Assistant to Mayor and Council)
SUMMARY:
During the Work Session held June 2, 2021, the mayor and City Council recommended the city proceed with the Western Arizona Economic Development District (WAEDD). As part of the contribution, the City of San Luis recommends appointing an elected member to the WAEDD Executive Committee. Each Executive Committee member will chair or co-chair a committee and make recommendations to the Board of Directors.
WAEDD is a federally designated Economic Development District (EDD) that helps lead the locally-based, regionally drive economic development planning process that leverages the public, private, and non-profit sectors' involvement to establish a strategic blueprint for regional collaboration. With a purpose to drive rural prosperity through the responsible mobilization of human infrastructure, financial investment, physical assets, and natural capital to generate a healthy and collaborative local economy.
Western Arizona was designated an Economic Development District (EDD), or WAEDD, by the U.S. Economic Development Administration (EDA) on June 03, 2020. The EDA has committed to providing financial assistance to economic development in western Arizona's distressed communities.
