Discussion Item - No Action to be Taken
ITEM:
Discussion and possible directions to staff on any and all matters regarding parking in alleys and the San Luis City Code § 10.15.235. (Miguel Alvarez, Interim Police Chief)
SUMMARY:
This item was on the City Council's Meeting agenda for December 28, 2022, but was continued so that a Work Session could be arranged.
The fire trucks and solid waste collection trucks need to get through the alleys and provide sanitation and public safety assistance if there is a fire where access is needed in the alley. The current code requires only ten feet (10') of the alleys to be left clear for traffic to get through. Fire trucks cannot get through the alleys in an emergency if cars are parked, obstructing their path. The city’s solid waste collection trucks cannot pick up and empty trash containers in alleys where vehicles are parked. So the city's sanitation workers must manually pick up and empty the trash containers, delaying service.
The information on the parking plan may help guide how to navigate residents concerns about parking.
