Adopt Resolution #19-208 Proclaiming Women's Suffrage Ratification Centennial Day

Purpose/Background:

Purpose:  To commemorate the 100th Anniversary of Minnesota's ratification of the 19th Amendment, allowing women to vote.

Background:  Staff received an email from Tom and Pam Mortenson, MN State Women Suffrage Centennial Committee, stating that September 8th is a day to celebrate the true 100th Anniversary of when Minnesota became the 15th state to sign on to the 19th Amendment giving women the right to vote.  A resolution proclaiming same is attached for formal adoption.

A celebration will take place on Sunday, September 8, 2019 - 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., at the Minnesota State Capitol and the Minnesota Woman Suffrage Memorial.  The event is free and open to the public. Women elected officials, present and past, are also invited to be part of a group photo on the State Capitol steps.

Notification:

Staff will post the proclamation on the City's notification board in the lobby.  Staff will also contact a representative of the League of Women Voters to inform them this proclamation will be declared.  A notice of the celebration at the State Capitol was also included in the Weekly Update.
