Authorization to Hire a Public Works Parks Maintenance Worker.

The purpose of this case is to request authorization to hire a full-time Parks Maintenance Worker. This new position was reviewed during the 2024 budget discussions and is accounted for in the 2024 budget.

Staff conducted a recruitment and interview process to fill the opening. Staff selected Mr. Walter Chance Nelson as the top candidate. Mr. Nelson underwent and passed the City's pre-employment testing process, including a criminal background check, professional reference check, driving record check and employment verification, as well as a physical exam and drug screen. The City extended a job offer to Mr. Nelson which is contingent upon City Council approval. Mr. Nelson will be subject to a 6-month probationary period and all Personnel Policies and/or employment contracts will apply.

The primary objective of this position is to provide general maintenance of city-owned parks and trail systems.  Responsibilities include all aspects of maintaining and repairing parks, park equipment and related facilities. This position is involved in snow plowing of public streets, trails and walks, as well as serving as a member of the on-call team, working a rotating on-call schedule 6-7 weeks per year.  
 

The funding required for this position is included in the 2024 budget.
