Title:
Authorization to Hire a Full-time Fire Inspector / Firefighter.
Purpose/Background:
The purpose of this case is for the City Council to authorize hiring a full-time Fire Inspector / Firefighter.
This position is included in the 2025 budget and was originally planned to begin in July; however, due to staffing shortages, this position was discussed at the February 11, 2025, City Council work session. The City Council agreed by consensus to allow staff to recruit for the position now in order to help mitigate the situation. Two internal candidates were interviewed and staff are recommending Mr. Adam Gordon for the position. Mr. Gordon has been with the City's Fire Department since January 2002 and has held many roles, including Fire Lieutenant, many committees, safety camp and Firefighter of the year in 2018. He also has over 10 years of very similar inspection experience through his current full-time employer, as well as two years' experience as a temporary fire inspector for the City of Ramsey. Mr. Gordon's past work experience will be an asset to the City. Mr. Gordon will be subject to a 1-year probationary period and the City's Personnel Policy.

- Responds to emergencies (medical, non-medical, and fires)
- Inspects structures for compliance with fire codes
- Meets with the public and business owners about compliance issues
- Generates business preplans
- Assists Fire Marshal with policy development and state fire code issues
- Conducts and reports on fire education awareness in the community
- Performs a wide range of tasks directed by Fire Marshal or Fire Chief
Funding Source:
The funding for this position is included in the 2025 budget.
Recommendation:
To hire Mr. Adam Gordon as a full-time Fire Inspector/Firefighter, effective on or near March 24, 2025, at $38.435 per hour, which is step 4 of the 2025 wage scale.
Outcome/Action:
Motion to authorize hiring Mr. Adam Gordon as a full-time Fire Inspector/Firefighter, effective on or near March 24, 2025, at $38.435 per hour, which is step 4 of the 2025 wage scale.
