Annual Public Works Department Update
Purpose/Background:
Purpose:
Public Works staff will present high-level updates on activities and operations completed by Public Works staff from June 2024 through May 2025.
Background:
The Public Works Department generally consists of four divisions including Building Maintenance, Parks, Streets, and Utilities, and is generally responsible for operating and maintaining all public infrastructure systems across the city.
Primary work duties for each division are as follows;
Building Maintenance –
Parks –
Streets –
Utilities –
Public Works staff will present high-level updates on activities and operations completed by Public Works staff from June 2024 through May 2025.
Background:
The Public Works Department generally consists of four divisions including Building Maintenance, Parks, Streets, and Utilities, and is generally responsible for operating and maintaining all public infrastructure systems across the city.
Primary work duties for each division are as follows;
Building Maintenance –
- Maintain 15 city-owned buildings including:
- Maintain and repair electrical, mechanical and plumbing systems
- Perform routine cleaning
- Raise and lower flags
- Provide snow and ice control
- Administer contracted repair services
- Maintain cemeteries
- Assist with administration of elections
Parks –
- Maintain over 500 acres of municipal parkland containing 39 municipal parks, 17 of which have playgrounds, along with 2 regional parks with varying amenities
- Maintain approximately 75 miles of trails, 30 miles of sidewalks, and 7 boardwalks
- Provide recreational programming opportunities
Streets –
- Maintain approximately;
- 188 miles paved streets
- 3 miles gravel roads
- 300-plus cul-de-sacs
- Provide snow and ice control on all city streets
- Maintain all stormwater infrastructure
- Mow grass and trim trees in city right-of-way
- Mow numerous city properties
Utilities –
- Operate and maintain municipal utility systems including approximately;
- 80 miles sanitary sewer
- 107 miles watermain
- 1,300 fire hydrants
- Operate and maintain the new Water Treatment Plant starting Fall 2025,
