Authorization to enter into contract with BKV for schematic design of Fire Station #2

On October 8, 2013 at the Council Work Session, Bruce Schwartzman of BKV made a presentation to the council detailing the next steps in rebuilding fire station #2. At the end of the presentation, the consensus of council was to move ahead with schematic design and negotiate a price estimated at $20,000.

Staff has received a Professional Services Proposal from BKV for the Schematic Design phase in the amount of $19,000. The process is expected to take 2-3 months.

Staff has researched with other communities to assure this amount at market value. Although most communities don't complete the schematic design phase separately, those who staff spoke with agreed that the $20,000 estimate represented a good average cost.

The $19,000 will be taken from the Professional Services line item of the 2014 Fire Department budget. Most of these monies will be forwarded from the 2013 budget that was earmarked for the Shared Services costs. Council may remember that a grant was received and covered the entire cost of the consultant used for the Shared Services Study.

It is recommended that Council authorize staff to enter into a contract in the amount of $19,000 for the professional services of a schematic design for fire station #2.
