Title:

Request for No Parking  Zone on 150th Ln Across From Ramsey Elementary

Purpose/Background:

Staff was asked to research the need for restricting the parking on one side of the roadway at 150th Ln east of Ramsey Elementary School.  This section of road is  popular with parents dropping off or picking up their children from school.  With parents parking on both sides of the road for approximately 15-20 minutes in the morning and afternoon the road can get a bit narrow.  150th Ln measures 32 foot from curb to curb.  Most passenger cars and light trucks average 7 feet in width, with larger vehicles averaging 8 feet in width.

Timeframe:

5 minutes

Observations/Alternatives:

Staff observed  parents dropping off students on the morning of Sept.5th and the afternoon of Sept. 9th.  During the morning time period between 8:30-9:00 am four cars parked on 150th lane mostly on the north side of the road.  During the afternoon, between 3:30-4:00, 14 cars used 150th Ln for student pickup and were spread evenly on both sides of the road.  There have been 3 reported accidents in this area, from 2006-present, with none of the accidents involving on street parking  on 150th Ln.  Staff feels that the level of on street parking observed during peak times does not require a restricted parking zone at this time.  Staff is aware that Ramsey Elementary host several activities throughout the year that may require some special parking restrictions, such as Grand Parent Day, Track and Field Day, etc.... PW staff could coordinate with Ramsey PD and Ramsey Elementary to perhaps set up some temporary "No Parking" zones as needed.

Funding Source:

Case was prepared as part of regular staff duties

Recommendation:

Staff recommends not restricting on road parking on 150th Ln at this time

Action:

Based on staff and committee discussion.
