Title:

Game Fair Participation

Background:

Game Fair was started in 1982 and has easily become the City's most attended destination event, drawing-in an estimated 40,000 visitors over two week-ends in August each year.  In 2010, the City became a more active participant in the event than it had been in the past.  As part of an agreement with Game Fair (represented by Chuck Delaney), the City agreed to absorb a portion of the cost of Police services for the event.  Under the agreement, the total $9417 cost of Police services (including overtime) was split 1/3 to the Economic Development Authority, 1/3 to the Housing and Redevelopment Authority, and 1/3 to Game Fair.  In exchange for this contribution by the City (total $6278), the City received a 10x10 booth.  The booth was used to promote the City, primarily the COR efforts and was staffed by the Development Manager, City/HRA staff, and the Mayor and Council, as available, over the two weekends.

The City has also been requested that efforts be made by Game Fair to identify their location as the City of Ramsey.  This information is from their current web site:

AMERICA'S ORIGINAL SINCE 1982

THE 30TH ANNUAL GAME FAIR
LOCATED IN THE CITY OF RAMSEY

In August, the hunting season is just around the corner and a hunter’s thoughts turn to the woods, fields and waterways. Dreaming about the hunt and planning the details are at the forefront of the mind. Soon it will be time for hunters to converge in pursuit of their quarry.

Nothing whets the appetite of an outdoor enthusiast more than the Game Fair, held annually over two weekends at Armstrong Kennels Ranch, six miles northwest of Anoka. Celebrating 30 years in 2011, Game Fair is the nation’s largest outdoor, pre-hunting, family participation event.

Game Fair is a sporting event for the entire family. Held in the out-of-doors on 80 beautiful acres of woods and water, Game Fair has everything you need for the outdoors. This year will feature many of the favorites from years past as well as many new exhibits, renovated grounds and new dog events. You are invited to attend Game Fair to see, try and buy the latest in hunting equipment and to learn from expert outdoorsmen and women. Special exhibits to view include everything from duck boats, archery, decoys, art, dogs, dog accessories, taxidermy and all the latest in hunting for the outdoor enthusiast.

Your hosts for all 30 years of Game Fair are Chuck and Loral I Delaney, who patterned the extravaganza after European Medieval Fall Festivals. Hosted by a family and designed for families, Game Fair is a participatory occasion. Fairgoers are encouraged to bring their dogs (leashed) and their guns or bows (cased) so they can participate in the numerous activities in this magnificent outdoor setting. Activities for children of all ages include: slingshots, air rifles, archery and darts. A variety of concession stands await with many of your favorite treats.

This year, there will be more exhibitors than ever before displaying the latest in outdoor and hunting equipment and providing expert advice. Hourly seminars presented by experts in every aspect educate, enlighten and entertain attendees on subjects such as how to fool a deer, techniques on bringing in ducks and geese, preparing game for a family feast and a host of other topics.

GAME FAIR 2011 AUGUST 12,13,14 19,20,21

Observations:

Game Fair is proposing to offer the City a 20 x 20 foot booth for an additional $750.  Mr. Delaney has proposed that this be an additional reduction from his 1/3 of Police services.

The additional space would be used to promote other aspects of the City other than economic development and The COR.  Examples include Police and Fire, Safety Camp, Police Explorers, Fire Safety, Recycling, local business contacts, large public works projects, park facilities, boat launch, Happy Days events, etc.).  The audience at Game Fair is largely non-Ramsey residents and topics should have something of a regional focus.

City staff time could be flexed and voluteers could be to lower staffing costs as much as possible.

Recommendation:

It is recommended that the Council consider the value of using Game Fair as a general City promotional event.

Funding Source:

Funding would be proposed consistent with last year 1/3 HRA, 1/3 EDA, 1/3 Game Fair, with the additional $750 to come from General Fund accounts.

Council Action:

Based upon Council discussion.
