Consider Setback Requirements for Accessory Structures

At the request of the Planning Commission during their regular meeting on July 22, 2021, City Staff have researched surrounding cities' regulations regarding accessory structures within setbacks and drainage and utility easements.

Notification is not required for discussion items.

City Staff have researched other cities' requirements for accessory structures within side and rear yard setbacks, as well as within drainage and utility easements. Generally, most surrounding cities have maintained standards for setbacks, but some do not have a specific section stating they cannot be placed in drainage and utility easements.

The attached document shows cities' standards for drainage and utility easements (pg. 1), and setbacks for the side and rear yards in relation to accessory structure placement (pg. 2).

City Staff are handling this case as part of their regular duties.

Action is not required at this time, as this case is an update only. The Planning Commission may request specific actions from City Staff if they desire.
