Title
Consider Hiring a Mechanic in the Public Works Department
Purpose/Background:
The purpose of this case is to request authorization to hire a full-time Mechanic.
As a result of discussions with the City Council at the November 9, 2021 City Council work session, it is anticipated that a Mechanic position will be vacant on November 24, 2021. Staff conducted a recruitment and interview process to fill the pending vacancy. Staff has selected Mr. Doug Polzin. Mr. Polzin has successfully passed the City's pre-employment testing and is recommended for hire. If hired, Mr. Polzin will be subject to a six-month probationary period, the personnel policy and the AFSCME union contact.
The primary objectives of the Mechanic's position consists of performing skilled mechanical services including, but not limited to automobiles, squad cars, heavy and light equipment, and other city-owned vehicles and equipment. This position requires mechanical aptitude, good time management and organizational skills, as well as the ability to lift up to 74 pounds without assistance. The position is subject to extended work days, call backs and shift schedules as required for the City's maintenance operations which includes, but is not limited to, snow plowing of public streets, trails and walks.

Funding Source:
The funding for back-filling this position is included in the 2021 budget.
Recommendation:
To hire Mr. Doug Polzin as a full-time Mechanic, effective on or near December 13, 2021, at $29.58 per hour which is step 4 of the 2021 wage scale with a credit of 3 vacation days.
