Authorization to Hire a Streets Maintenance Worker to Fill a Current Vacancy

Purpose/Background:

The purpose of this case is to request authorization to hire a full-time Streets Maintenance Worker to fill a current vacancy. 

This specific position is vacant because a current Streets Maintenance Worker, Mr. Mario Cavallaro was transferred to the Utilities Division to fill a vacancy that occurred due to a recent Utilities Division retirement.  Staff conducted a recruitment and interview process In December/January to fill a different vacancy in the Streets Division. There were two viable candidates from that recruitment.  Mr. Herrick was hired at the January 11, 2022 meeting.  Staff has selected Mr. Andrew Leland to fill this vacancy. Subsequently, Mr.Leland underwent and passed the City's pre-employment testing process, including a criminal background check, professional reference check, driving record check and employment verifications; as well as a physical exam and drug screen. The City extended a job offer which is contingent upon City Council approval. Staff is recommending Mr.Leland be hired as a full-time Streets Maintenance Worker. Mr. Leland  will be subject to a 6-month probationary period and all Personnel Policies and/or employment contracts will apply.

 

Notification:

The Street Maintenance Worker position is responsible for constructing and maintaining streets, parking lots and related property; performing snow related activities; performing general maintenance activities; performing general labor; performing vehicle and motorized equipment maintenance; performing and assisting with landscape, grounds care, and forestry/naturalist activities; providing assistance with preparation of community events; performing mechanical building maintenance and repair; as well as a wide range of other tasks as required.

In addition, the Streets Maintenance Worker is required be a member of the Public Works on-call team and work a rotating on-call schedule 8 weeks per year. This requires employees to be available to respond during evenings, weekends and holidays.

 

Funding Source:

The funding required for this position has already been included in the 2022 budget. 

Recommendation:

Staff recommends hiring Mr. Andrew Leland as a full-time Public Works Streets Maintenance Worker, effective on or near February 14, 2022, at $24.389 per hour, which is step 1 of the 2022 wage scale, with a credit of 5 vacation days.

Action:

Motion to to hire Mr. Andrew Leland as a full-time Public Works Streets Maintenance Worker, effective on or near February 14, 2022, at $24.389 per hour, which is step 1 of the 2022 wage scale, with a credit of 5 vacation days.
