Title:
Movie in the Park Discussion
Purpose/Background:
Councilmembers Specht and Stewart requested this discussion. Concern was expressed about the city's plan to show a PG-13 rated movie on Friday, September 12, 2025. Specifically, the movie is the horror/comedy 2024 Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.
The city is required to purchase rights for movies or music played for the public. For 2025, the city has organized two movies. The first being Moana 2, which played earlier this month. Though historically the movies were geared towards families with younger children, last year staff received requests to show an adult/teen-oriented scary movie. Due to these requests, staff chose to offer a movie to suit the older children crowd this year as our recreation division attempts to offer fun for all ages of the community. The rights to Beetlejuice Beetlejuice have already been purchased. Costs do vary based on the age of the movie, but newer released movies do tend to be hundreds of dollars per showing.
For comparison, staff conducted a quick search of what other cities show for their movie ratings and it is not uncommon to find PG-13 rated showings throughout other communities.

Time Frame/Observations/Alternatives:
Staff understand that not everyone in the community may like what is being programmed, but as noted above, attempts are made to offer programming to all ages. Furthermore, if staff were expected to adjust planned programming every time someone disagreed, it would likely be found that challenges would present themselves to find something everyone likes. For example, our weekly concert series provides a wide array of music genres for this very reason. Parents are ultimately responsible for what they allow their children to attend regarding our available programming, and based on the requests received staff feel like this meets the programming desires of this age group of residents.
Recommendation:
Allow staff to program recreational events based on feedback received by the community. Furthermore, staff monitor attendance levels and seek feedback on what else could be offered.
Outcome/Action:
Based on council consensus.
