Title:
Discuss Ability for Staff to Consider Donated Exercise Equipment
Purpose/Background:
The purpose of this discussion is to seek City Council approval to allow staff to consider accepting donated exercise equipment from City employees or others that may express interest.
Per policy, all donations to the City must be formally accepted by the City Council. This practice would continue. The intent of this discussion is to receive City Council feedback on whether the City Council is open to allowing City staff to consider donated exercise items.
The new Employee Wellness Room has daily use by City Hall Staff. Currently, the room holds two exercise floor mats, two 3-pound free weights and a leg-raising machine that was unused by the Police Department. Items such as these and others align with our broader goals of promoting health, morale, and productivity among employees. Multiple staff members have expressed interest in donating exercise equipment to the Employee Wellness Room in an effort to support staff wellness initiatives.
Staff understands that it will be important to be cautious in their review of potential donations. Selection criteria will include a safety and quality review, risk/exposure to ongoing expenses, as well as other factors such as space limitations, etc. Staff is seeking the City Council’s approval by consensus this evening to consider obtaining appropriate equipment (as determined by the Building Maintenance Supervisor); as well as to permit building maintenance staff to provide any needed ongoing maintenance to said equipment so long as the cost is minimal.
Benefits
• Promotes staff health and wellbeing at minimal upfront cost.
• Strengthens staff engagement through donation opportunities.
• Supports retention and morale by investing in employee wellness.
