Annual Public Works Department Update
Purpose/Background:
Purpose:
Public Works staff will present high-level updates on activities and operations completed by Public Works staff over the last year.
Background:
The Public Works Department generally consists of four divisions including Building Maintenance, Parks, Streets, and Utilities, which are generally responsible for operating and maintaining all public infrastructure systems across the city. Primary work duties for each division are as follows:
Building Maintenance –
Maintained 17 city-owned buildings including:
Assisted with elections operations
Streets –
Maintained 190 miles of paved streets, 3 miles of gravel roads, and over 300 cul-de-sacs
Provided snow and ice control operations on all city streets
Maintained all stormwater infrastructure
Mowed grass and trimmed trees in public right-of-ways
Mowed city-owned non-park properties
Utilities –
Produced over 825,444,000 gallons of drinking water
Flushed entire waterman system twice
Responded to 3,771 Gopher State One Call locate requests
Operated and maintained all municipal utility infrastructure including;
Maintained over 500 acres of municipal parkland containing 39 municipal parks with 17 playgrounds and 2 regional parks with varying amenities including:
Administered over 30 unique public recreation programs
Administered design and construction of The Waterfront Waterplay Improvements project

- Performing routine cleanings
- Raising and lowering flags
- Providing snow and ice control operations
- Administering contracted repair services
Assisted with elections operations
Streets –
Maintained 190 miles of paved streets, 3 miles of gravel roads, and over 300 cul-de-sacs
Provided snow and ice control operations on all city streets
Maintained all stormwater infrastructure
Mowed grass and trimmed trees in public right-of-ways
Mowed city-owned non-park properties
Utilities –
Produced over 825,444,000 gallons of drinking water

- 83 miles sanitary sewer
- 10 sanitary sewer lift stations
- 118 miles waterman
- 1,300 fire hydrants
- 3 water towers
- New Water Treatment Plant (commissioned January 2026)
Maintained over 500 acres of municipal parkland containing 39 municipal parks with 17 playgrounds and 2 regional parks with varying amenities including:
- Mowing
- Tree removal and trimming
- Field striping
- Trash pick-up
- Restroom cleaning
Administered over 30 unique public recreation programs
Administered design and construction of The Waterfront Waterplay Improvements project
